Location: Lake Elizabeth,40000 Paseo Padre Pkwy, Fremont, CA
On a beautiful sunny morning at Lake Elizabeth, the Rcoz team set up a picnic table under a canopy of trees with a gurgling brook nearby. Hot coffee and cookies were laid out close to the trail, which caught the attention of South Asians enjoying their morning walks. What a perfect setting for the meaningful conversations that unfolded in our very first Chalo Baatein Karen Discussion series!
Our trusted advisor, psychiatrist Dr. Seema Sehgal, answered a wide range of questions from attendees, many of whom were eager to understand more about mental wellness within the South Asian cultural context. The conversation touched on how cultural norms can make it difficult to talk about mental health or seek help.
This conversation highlighted how much our community needs this space. It not only validates the work we are doing at Rcoz but also shows how deeply people want to get involved—whether as storytellers, volunteers, or simply by spreading the word within their own circles.
One attendee shared how a prior Rcoz event gave her the courage to take a step in the right direction. Six months later, she is ready to face all her demons and our hearts swelled with pride for our courageous warrior!
This event was a powerful reminder of the power of conversations and open dialogue on mental health awareness, especially within the South Asian community It was a wonderful feeling for the Rcoz team to see nearly 35 people leave with something meaningful—whether it was new insights, a sense of connection, or simply, that they are not alone.
Join Rcoz at our next event and be part of this journey toward breaking the stigma around mental health.
